Picking the UKULELE!

A number of requests have come in regarding UKULELE FINGER PICKING. Many of us experienced a dilemma in that the internet teaches so many different techniques and patterns. Some of us found what is called THE TRAVIS PICKING PATTERN to be a GREAT PLACE to START.

THE TRAVIS PICKING PATTERN, also refereed to as “Alternating Thumb Style” is named after Country Musician MERLE TRAVIS. In the 1930’s & 40’s he introduced this patter on his guitar with hit songs like “Sixteen Tons”, “Midnight Special” and “Muskrat Ramble”.

Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Jimmy Paige (Led Zeppelin), various FLEETWOOD MAC lead guitarists, Chet Atkins and singer/songwriter John Prine and many others all used this method in their music.

It incorporates THUMB, INDEX and MIDDLE finger allowing the player to get started FAST and PICKING some of their favorite songs in a very short time. Then it provides that solid anchor for a player to expand out into other methods if they desire.

The YouTube tutorial clearly lays out the pattern and then transitions into using it in one of our current focus songs “BROWN EYED GIRL”

GOOD LUCK and GOOD PICKING!
